# Print files

The **Print Files** section is where you design the printable file for your customizable product. Everything that the customer personalizes — text, images, clipart, colors — is built here. This setup is what generates the final high-resolution file used for production.

## 1. Layers in the Print File

To create a design, merchants can add the following 3 **layer types**:

### Text Layer&#x20;

By clicking on the "Add layer" button then selecting the "Text" option, you can add a text layer to your design:

<figure><img src="https://4235989069-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrihgZgEjEfk2NzCONWV0%2Fuploads%2FL3A3rb5WlliThY2Eaf3U%2FAdd%20text%20.png?alt=media&amp;token=a145aee2-c1ad-4240-bdbc-40dc63403d9e" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add text layer</p></figcaption></figure>

Once a text box is selected, a formatting toolbar appears — just like in popular design tools:

* **Font**: Select from your uploaded fonts (via the **Assets** section) or you can add a new font and see you it's displayed.
* **Font size**: Set up the maximum and the minimum text size within the text box.
* **Color**: Choose a default text color and optionally allow customers to change it.
* **Transform**: Flip the text horizontally or vertically to adjust orientation.
* **Position**: Align the position of the text layer on the canvas using X/Y coordinates.&#x20;

<figure><img src="https://4235989069-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrihgZgEjEfk2NzCONWV0%2Fuploads%2Fkx6JbSXhxBeY7i8Pfdre%2FText%20layer%20edit%20.png?alt=media&amp;token=75612e42-9283-44dd-a78e-6ad476389c92" alt=""><figcaption><p>Text's tool bar </p></figcaption></figure>

Besides the toolbar, you can customize how much control the customer has over that text. These options appear in the right-hand panel when the text layer is selected.

Here’s what each checkbox allows:

* **Personalize text:** Enables the customer to **edit the text content** (e.g. change "Your text" to "Emily’s Mug")
* **Personalize font**: Allows customers to choose from a list of fonts (that you’ve uploaded in the **Assets > Fonts** section)
* **Personalize with color palette**: Displays a set of **predefined color swatches** (from your **Assets > Colors**) that the customer can choose from.
* **Personalize with color picker**: Lets customers **choose any color** using a color wheel.&#x20;

### Image Layer&#x20;

To add an Image layer, you click on the "Add layer" -> "Image" option, then you will see a popup to select an image from your Assets or upload a new image from your device. Once you add an image layer to the print file, you'll see the upload settings on the right-hand side.

<figure><img src="https://4235989069-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrihgZgEjEfk2NzCONWV0%2Fuploads%2F9JFqhWr2IufZZiPbFMy5%2FImage%20custom.png?alt=media&amp;token=962d4215-9af8-4aba-afb7-6350555e3b43" alt=""><figcaption><p>Image personalize setting</p></figcaption></figure>

Enable the "Personalize" checkbox to allow the customer to upload their own image into this layer. The "Label" field is used to name the image input. You also can set the max/min resolution required for uploaded images. This ensures the design maintains high quality, especially for printing.

### Category Layer

The **Category Layer** allows you to offer customers a range of clipart options for a specific part of your design — such as hairstyles, outfits, accessories, or characters. A **category** is essentially a bundle of images (clipart), organized in the **Assets > Images** section of the app.

<figure><img src="https://4235989069-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrihgZgEjEfk2NzCONWV0%2Fuploads%2Fj53NbHHEuEpkc9oidMrf%2FCategory%20custom.png?alt=media&amp;token=9e77ff55-2558-4f3f-941f-49023893e5c0" alt=""><figcaption><p>Add a category layer</p></figcaption></figure>

When you add a Category Layer to the print file, it pulls in all clipart images from the linked category. On the right-hand side, you can set up further customization settings to the category that you just added, such as: reordering the clipart, renaming individual items, or removing items from the list at any time.&#x20;

## 2. Layout&#x20;

The **Layout** allows you to create **multiple default design arrangements** (called layouts) within a single print file. Each layout acts like a preset scene — and the customer can choose which one they want to start with.

This is ideal for use cases like:

* Choosing between **1 cat layout**, **2 cats layout**, or **3 cats layout**
* Switching between **family combinations** (e.g., dad + son, mom + daughter)
* Selecting a birthday theme with different design structures

### How It Works

* Each **layout** is a grouped set of design elements (text, images, clipart, etc.)
* Customers will choose one layout at the beginning of the customization flow
* Only the selected layout will be visible and editable

You can create as many layouts as you need — just group elements using **`Ctrl + G`** (on Window) or **`Cmd + G`** (on Mac), and they’ll be treated as separate layout options.

<figure><img src="https://4235989069-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FrihgZgEjEfk2NzCONWV0%2Fuploads%2FGSuBMMsjOyfNPFu7DeFu%2FLayout%20setting.png?alt=media&amp;token=4ef20b75-db55-4cef-9733-307466d16787" alt=""><figcaption><p>Layout Settings</p></figcaption></figure>

Once you've created your layouts, you can customize how they appear to customers in the **Layout settings** panel. You can give the layout selector a name (e.g., “Family Combo”) and mark it as **required** if customers must choose a layout before customizing. All your grouped layouts will show under “Values,” where you can rename them, reorder them, and set a thumbnail image for each option.

You can also choose a **display style** for how layouts are shown on the storefront:

* Dropdown
* Inline buttons&#x20;
* Thumbnail images&#x20;

Choose the one that best fits your product and user experience.

Once you're finished setting up your print files, click the **Next** button in the top-right corner to move on to the **Preview** setup.
